Tiverton travelled to Honiton after a week of fine sunshine for an eagerly anticipated mate against a strong team who we hadn't played in a couple of years. Coming into the match the skipper had won the last 5 coin tosses after a wretched run of losing the toss. Off went both skippers to the middle for the toss on the walk back the skipper gave us the nod we were bowling, this could only mean one thing make that 6 out of 6!!
After looking at a wicket that resembled concrete the opening bowlers opened but found little pace in the wicket. Rendall and J Parr carried on there tight opening spells which has been a feature of the season so far after 9 overs the score was 32 for 0. First change saw Pugsley come on for J Parr and Williams for Rendall. Pugsley soon striking amid a short spell of drizzle taking 2 in 2 getting out opening bat B Cann who would later provide some fire power for Big Williams to bat his natural game. Pugsley finishing with two wicket maidens and figures of 4 for 25 from 9. The skipper the turned to opener Rendall but after some quick counting was stood down for Jerry Reed to use a couple of overs up however he got a wicket in his first over. Honiton were not looking like getting to 200 but a late onslaught from Ingram 40 not out took them to 228 for 8. Brendon and Rendall getting a wicket apiece.
The interval consisted of tea and a chat with MP Neil Parish who lost a £5 bet that Honiton wouldn't get 200 a bet most of us would have lost!!
The chase got off to a solid start getting to 53 before open Jerry fell to J. Cann who came on for the openers as they didn't get any wickets. Next in was the skipper who delivered some big blows before chipping one back to B. Cann for 31 and the score at 97. The run rate was still at 5 an over so a boundary and a couple of single every over was going the job. D. Reed was next to fall after getting a start 34. Next in was T. Reed who would prove a catalyst for mutiny in the ranks as he tried to hole out to B. Cann only for the fielder to drop it thus leading to a long list of expletives aimed at the fielder!! Another start another wicket Reed falling for 21 and the score 135-4. Jason played the Pugsley anchor role and the later was out for an uncharacteristic duck. Dixon and Parr putting on 42 until Dixon decided to play the identical shot that got the skipper, chipped up for B. Cann to get himself another. Out walked Dane only to be greeted with the words no singles lads so he duly obliged and cracked a 6 heaving across the line. A single, four and lastly another heave across the line 6 brought about B. Cann to let Dane know he was heaving across the line to which the big man walked down the wicket showed him his shot again told him its a 6 in the book and walked back. Only to turn around and be bowled needless to say Dane was given the pointing finger back to the changing room from B. Cann who didn't see the umpire waving dead ball!! However next ball he was off down the pitch for a single that wasn't a single and once he got himself turned around the bails where already off. J. Parr was past his 50 by now and looking like winning the game for us a brisk 2 from Jake and a 0 not out for Mike and a scampered 2 we over the line Jason finishing on 61 and the skipper ran to the middle to congratulate his brother on his match winning innings.
Great game of cricket had all the ups and downs played mostly within the spirit of the game!!
Next up is Kilmington at home let's keep the wheels rolling.
